New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) The government today said the University Grant Commission is assisting state universities to expand their higher education program by setting up new colleges as Delhi has a limited capacity to meet aspirations of students for higher studies.
"The existing capacity of colleges is not adequate to meet increasing aspirations of students to study in the best colleges of Delhi...UGC is assisting state universities...to provide quality education in their own locality by opening new colleges and strengthening the existing ones," Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
Replying to a question on setting up a national fund which will provide low interest rate loan to students, she said, "The Planning Commission raised doubt on viability of a separate entity exclusively catering to education sector...
Hence the proposal was not taken forward."
An easy way of facilitating this arrangement could be through interest subvention, she said.
On allocation of grant-in-aid for elementary education, the minister said, "The 13th Finance Commission has approved grant-in-aid to states amounting to Rs 24,068 crore during the period 2010-11 to 2014-15 for elementary education sector. PTI AD
