The Department of Higher Education will soon introduce an online attendance system in city colleges. The system would not only make the data relating attendance of students available online but also provide students monthly update on their attendance status.
College principals say that data relating to attendance will be uploaded on the college website on a monthly basis and would be accessible to students. All students are required to have at least 75% attendance to be eligible for examinations. Every year several students fail to sit for university exams due to low attendance. Private colleges allow students having low attendance to appear for exams after charging a hefty fine but there is no such provision in government-run colleges.
Last year about 80 students of sector 11 situated Post Graduate Government College were not able to sit in exams because of not having the required attendance. The new system of online attendance is expected to be of great help to such students as it would help them keep track of their attendance. Dr J S Raghu, the principal of the above mentioned college, said that the plan would be implemented in the current academic session.
Once the system is introduced, the students who are low on attendance will be issued a warning, and if they show no improvement a letter would be sent to their homes. The system has already been introduced in some departments of Panjab University and is receiving a very good response.
