Two West Bengal ministers, Bratya Basu and Soumen Mahapatra, who were college professors before they became ministers in Mamata Banerjee's Cabinet, have approached the state's finance department demanding salaries at par with their previous salaries. As ministers they are getting Rs 7,500 per month apart from ministerial perks. Higher Education Minister Bratya Basu was a professor of Bengali at Kolkata's Rammohan College and with 15 years of service was getting close to Rs 60,000 per month as gross salary. Water Resources Minister Mahaparta, who taught Botany at Pingla College in Midnapore, was getting around Rs 50,000 per month. After their file was referred to the Chief Minister by the state's Finance Ministry, an angry Mamata Banerjee called them and admonished them for not following the examples of their colleagues who had left far more financially rewarding professions like law and medicine to join her Cabinet.
